Why are Slippery Rock University scores so important to football fans all over the nation? Is it because they have played in such prestigious places as Fenway Park or the Rose Bowl? Is it because they should have been # 1 in 1936 because they beat West Virginia Wesleyan, which beat Duquesne, which beat Pitt, which beat Notre Dame, which beat Northwestern, which beat Minnesota?
There were split polls that year with either Minnesota or Pittsburgh # 1. Why not Slippery Rock? After all The Rock drew the largest crowd in NCAA Division II history when it played PSAC Division rival Shippensburg before 60,000 in the “big House”.
With all the history, a new chapter will be written in a big game this weekend! Even though “The Rock” is on a 7 game winning streak (9-1 over all) and ranked in the top 20, they will travel to Bloomsburg University for a showdown with the Huskies.
The Huskies of Bloomsburg U are also 9-1 and ranked in the top 20. Last year these two teams had a real shoot out with BU winning 49-41.
These teams first met in 1934, but that game was nothing like what will take place on Danny Hall Field in Redman Stadium this Saturday. This game will be for the PSAC Championship and will feature two teams with very different ways of finding success. BU has a powerful downhill ground attack. SR uses a high-flying passing attack. The Huskies, coming off a huge win over 8th ranked West Chester, average 482.9 yards per game and The Rock average 573.4.
With BU tailback, Franklyn Quiteh pounding the line and a DB Jonathan Patrick INT late in the game, Slippery Rock will come up short in the game but they will still be # 1 in our hearts. We will be waiting for the Saturday Scoreboard Show so we can here the Slippery Rock score.
