The 2022 College Football Season is upon us. Excitement, anticipation, expectation, and anxiety are all mixed together. For many of us the 2022 season also brings some hesitations, distractions and even some reluctance: transfer portal, politics, name image and likeness, increased cost, realignment, and even for a few of us there are moral and lifestyle issues, alcohol sales in the stadium and the proliferation of gambling. If our head is not spinning yet, surely our heart is.
College Football is so embedded in our life. For many of us it is the greatest game ever! We remember plays from twenty years past. We bleed our team colors. We suffer the losses for years. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat is innate to our football culture.
So, what do we do? To not watch, cheer, brag and fulfill our role as Monday Morning Quarterback, a huge part of our lives would be missing. It would be like trying to enjoy the hole in the doughnut rather than the delicious, delightful, mouth-watering taste of a Krispy Kreme.
So, how do we watch? How do we jump into football fandom with both feet? It is the pits to try to be a fan, a fanatic with only one foot in the game!
For the love of the game, HOW? We need to develop filters to filter out diversions. Yes, we wear our rose-colored, red, blue, or even orange glasses. Maybe we can have something like the silly 3-D glasses that were used many years ago for 3-D movies; they are even used today in Disney attractions in order achieve the effects desired to see things clearly.
We need those 3-D glasses to filter out the mush and see through the haziness. West coast teams playing in the Big Ten, which has fourteen teams; West Virginia and Texas Tech in the Big twelve, which at present has ten teams. Texas, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, and UCF are on the move. ACC, AAC, well you get the picture.
Not too long ago the Big Ten, ACC and PAC 12 established a unity pact. That was before UCLA and USC decided to leave the PAC 12 for the Big Ten. In the past there was discussion about expanding the College Football Playoff but it was shot down. Now there seems to be a move to approve an expansion of the playoff. In 2020 there were 587 players who entered the transfer portal. This grew to 950 transfers in 2021. There appeared to be no guidance as to when and how these transfers take place. In August, the NCAA board approved transfer windows to bring some basic logic to the baloney. While all of this is taking place, the 2022 College football season is underway.
As genuine fans, new fans, old fans, we can say the right things, support the right things, and be the right people. Yes, there is chaos, but we can continue to be a fan, watch, cheer the players on the field for the love of the game. We must not permit anyone to rob us of the enjoyment of the game.
