On November 14, 1953, Andy Griffith’s monologue, What It Was, Was Football was released. He began by telling a story about being in a college town at about dinnertime on a Saturday. How many stories have we heard echoing over the years from college towns all across the United States!
Football is here just as sure as fall is at the entrance gate. It may still be hot but who cares, it is football time in small towns with high schools playing on Friday nights. In College towns across the nation games are played each Saturday.
The NFL kicked off on September 7th just a few days after Florida State University defeated Louisiana State University 45 to 24. The Detroit Lions upset the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20. Lions Quarterback, Jared Goff, continued his streak of passes without an interception which is now up to 359 – 3rd longest in NFL history.
Speaking of NFL history, Kansas City also lost the first Super Bowl on January 15, 1967. Actually, it was not called Super Bowl at that time. It was the American Football League vs the National football League world championship. While Len Dawson, Kansas City’s quarterback, was effective using play-action pass for the first time in pro football, the Chiefs lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-10.
Bart Starr was the Most Valuable Player in that first Super Bowl. Starr was also MVP in Super Bowl II when the Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14. Starr was also a part of what is known as the Ice Bowl. In the 1967 NFL Championship Game, the Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 21-17, but the real story was the 13-below weather in Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. The wind chill made it feel like minus 38.
The game that many people consider the Greatest Game ever Played took place on December 28, 1958. The Baltimore Colts kicked a field goal with seven seconds left in regulation to tie the New York Giants 17 to 17. This sent the game into sudden-death overtime. This was the first overtime game in the regular season or the playoffs. This was only the third season that the NFL Championship game had been broadcast to a national television audience. With millions watching from coast to coast, this game elevated pro football to new heights.
College football has had its share of great games. Ohio State and Michigan, LSU and Alabama, Nebraska and Oklahoma, Florida State and Miami are some of the well-known big game rivalries.
Saturday, September 9 will feature Texas A&M playing at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami against the Hurricanes. The Texas Longhorns will visit Tuscaloosa, AL for the first time since 1902.
There are dark clouds hanging over college football. The transfer portal presents numerous problems. NIL has need of structure and control. Realignment has brought much confusion and has created a path that leads to great upheaval.
On Friday nights high school football games are played before excited fans and each of these games have great meaning for local town folks. A big rivalry in Clay County Alabama between Clay County High School and Lineville High School did their realignment by joining forces to build an even greater football history.
