The first week of College Football was not disappointing in any way. It had a very satisfying flavor and it whetted our appetite for what lies ahead. There were some outstanding games, odd games along with a few surprises.

The outstanding games of week one:

Pittsburgh 38 – West Virginia 31 . . . Any backyard brawl does not make you think of fine dining. The thought that comes to mind is a big juicy steak at a loud steakhouse.

Penn State 35 – Purdue 31 . . . This was not perfect football. This was not pure football, but after a slow start it ended up an exciting hard played game.

Indiana 23 – Illinois 20 . . . The Big Ten already! Both teams want to climb the ladder in conference standings and the Hoosiers helped themselves.

North Carolina State 21 – East Carolina 20 . . . The Wolfpack came into the ’22 season with high hopes and high ranking but no one told the Pirates of East Carolina so the game came down to the last minute.

Ohio State 21 – Notre Dame 10 . . . While the Buckeyes won by eleven, this was a real contest in the first half with two terrific football teams showing their strength. Ohio State took over in the second half to almost move into the dominant category because of the quality of the opponent.

Odd Games:

North Carolina 63 – Appalachian State 61 . . . neither team had any idea of what to do on defense. Any time 124 points are scored in a game that game qualifies to be called an odd game.

Florida State 24 – LSU 23 . . . Looking at the score would automatically make this game look like an exciting game not an odd game. The reason it was an odd game, neither team seemed want to win. The Seminoles were a couple of yards away from a touchdown to seal the game and they fumbled on a pitch out and LSU recovered. LSU had a terrific drive to score a game tying touchdown with the extra point. The extra point was blocked. The Tigers had a second chance to win the game with a last-minute field goal but missed.

Iowa 7 – South Dakota State 3 . . . This was not only an odd game but one for the ages. After the offensive dual of the first half ended in a three – three tie, they put offense in reverse with Iowa scoring two safeties to stumble out to a 7 – 3 win. With a total of 21 for 51 combined passing and 166 to 127 total yards Hawkeye edge, these teams could have used some of the offense displayed in the Carolina –
Appalachian game.

Dominant performances:

Georgia 49 – Oregon 3 . . . This was unexpected and almost unbelievable

Alabama 55 – Utah State 0 . . . Utah State is no cupcake – an impressive win

Baylor 69 – Albany 10

Michigan 51 – Colorado State 7

Taking Notice:

BYU 50 – South Florida 21

Syracuse 31- Louisville 7

Oregon State 34 – Boise State 17

Surprises:

There were a couple: Old Dominion 20 – Virginia Tech 17 and Florida 29 – Utah 26

The first week had just about everything and that is why College Football is so enjoyable. Football, real
football, college football week two coming up.
